Celebrating America!

June 29, 2023

The 4th of July, also known as Independence Day, holds a special place in the hearts of Americans. Most people associate the 4th of July with backyard barbecues, hot dogs, and of course, fireworks. In honor of the upcoming holiday, we would like to give you a few fun facts about the 4th of July.

-John Adams wrote a letter to his wife about how memorable Independence Day would be in American history. He said the day should be celebrated with parades, sports, and laughter. But he thought it was celebrated on the wrong day! The Continental Congress declared our freedom from Great Britain on July 2, 1776 and John Adams referred to Independence Day as July 2nd. He was even known to turn down invitations to 4th of July celebrations in protest!

-The Declaration of Independence was primarily drafted by Thomas Jefferson and adopted on July 4, 1776. It proclaimed the United States as a free and independent nation. The Declaration of Independence inspired other countries around the world to seek their own independence and influenced succeeding movements for liberty and equality.

-The Liberty Bell located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, rings 13 times every Independence Day to honor the 13 original colonies. The descendants of the signers of the Declaration of Independence tap the bell at 2 pm ET every 4th of July.

We at DWM would like to wish you all a safe and Happy 4th of July!
